I had the day off Friday and did some hiking in Elm Creek Park to help me come to terms with summer's end.
My friends and I got in some late summer camping at Mille Lacs Kathio State Park this weekend. We opted for Kathio because of flooding in SE Minnesota and a fire ban on the North Shore due to drought. (It's been an interesting summer here in the Land of 10000 Lakes.) We hiked the rolling wooded hills, kayaked on the Rum River, and climbed to the top of a 100-foot-high fire tower (made interesting by high winds). We also learned that Kathio was actually a really bad transcription of the word Izatys. Izatys is a name the The Mdewekanton Dakota of the area gave themselves. A transcriptionist badly misread explorer Daniel Greysolon, Sieur duLhut's, journals. Apparently the Iz was read as a K, but don't ask me how he got "hio" out of the "ys".
