"Weldon brings to 21 the number of House Republicans who have announced they will retire at the end of this Congress, leaving Democrats with an even better shot at significantly increasing their majority next year. Four other House Republicans, including former Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) have resigned, two of them to seek higher office. Meanwhile, only six House Democratic seats will be open in the 2008 congressional elections -- three due to illness or death of the incumbent. Democrats view Brevard County Commissioner Nancy Higgs as a very strong challenger to enter the race for Weldon's open seat."

"But so far in at least one key respect, the Democrats are clearly beating their G.O.P. counterparts: voter turnout. Voters are showing up at Democratic primaries and caucuses in record numbers, doubling, tripling or even quadrupling the turnout totals recorded in the last fully contested two-party election in 2000. Overall, Democrats have so far outnumbered Republicans at primary polling places by a rate of about 7 to 5."

I've also had two Republicans (friends of friends) recently express to me their plans to vote Democrat this year. I asked them what made them come to their senses why, and both said "We just need a change." I felt the need to contain my excitement for fear of scaring them back over to the dark side.
I'm not naive enough to think the Dems can't still screw this whole thing up, but I find myself cautiously optimistic that change for the better is coming. ...optimism I need to get me through all-too-common Bush administration stories like this one!
I helped a woman at the reference desk today who was looking for more books to help her with her English lit class. She already had Poetry for Dummies, The Complete Idiot's Guide to English Literature, AND...a shiny new copy of The Politically Incorrect Guide to English and American Literature. "Stop right there!," you say. "The Politically Incorrect Guide? Tell me more!" Well, from the cover of this little gem, here are some teasers:
"Most great literature was, in fact, written by dead white males"
"Jane Austen was a fan of "the patriarchy," not oppressed by it"
"Most great writers have been conservatives, if not reactionaries."
"The Greatest English Literature is explicitly Christian and celebrates military courage"
Yes, I was as intrigued as you no doubt are! What else did my professors hide from me in college? Thank the Father, Son, and Holy (male) Ghost, it's not just a book, but a whole series of books. You can just call it the P.I.G. for short. Hardy, har, har! I bet you can guess at least half of subjects. Here are some hints. Did you know:
- The Earth has often been hotter than it is now!?!
- American Muslim groups are engaged in a huge cover-up of Islamic doctrine and history!?!
- Capitalism defeats racism, improves the environment, and is essential to a free society!?!
- Most women want a husband and a strong family, but "independent" feminists pine for a sugar daddy in Uncle Sam!?!
You'll be excited to know that there are forthcoming guides to the Bible and Hunting, too! Here's hoping that a Media P.I.G. is in the works. What other subjects are we missing P.I.G.s for?
